The modern conquest

Its undeniable historic tradition that the conquerors always plunder, always pillage and rape, leaving a really big and ugly, ugly mess in their wake. This has happened over countless centuries and man's history is filled with such blood-stained events. Infact, the climax of each military campaign cumulates to the beheading of the infidel pagan king who's flag is then burnt and his children slaughtered to avoid any remote possibility of a counter rebellion as revenge.

Today, with our comfort-filled lives, noble notions of human rights and so-called maturity of human civilization, we have put all that historic crap behind us. This no longer happens in our world; there are no glorified heroic knights who hunt enemies of the great empire like greyhounds and certainly no plundering, pillaging or raping when those enemies are eventually caught. Or is that really the case?

Today the world has these self-proclaimed holders of the freedom torch. With their help, we have made one leaping achievement by re-inventing a concept called patriotic justice. Just last night, under this concept, completely unrelated to the savage human traditions of the past, the Iraqi dictator overthrown by invading foreign legions was executed by a court of 'his own people'. Like many self-imposed leaders, he was not a good man, killed scores of innocent people and destroyed countless lives under his reign. But the sole purpose of invasion was not to 'save' the people of Iraq. This war was waged for a very different reason i.e. finding those damned weapon stockpiles which were supposedly going to be used again the people of United States and her allies. And thus stopping the role this guy was playing in encouraging global terror which undermines freedom of all people in the world. But saving the people of Iraq from a tyrant's ruthless rule?? This wasn't really on the to-do list and hardly ever mentioned.

Fast forward a couple of years, the war is 'officially' over and the leader of infidels has been captured and executed. There were no weapons and no links to any terrorist camps. Although as a small side-effect of this whole campaign, terrorists are NOW in Iraq and they seem to be getting really good at what they do as they have plenty of opportunity to practice. Interesting how things turn out in the end don't you think?

As a direct consequence of the war in Iraq, today we have thriving terrorist groups in that country who will happily setup shop anywhere else in the world once that place is no longer of interest to them. More than 600 thousand Iraqis (yes, read that again!) have died since the great leader of the free world declared war on the infidel king. I'm not sure about the numbers but I don't think the dead tyrant had caused so many deaths in the whole of his 35 year rule.

The tales of horror from Abu Gharaib prison, the ongoing trials such as 14 murders in a family by US Marines and the total death toll in Iraq simply tell us that we have not changed over centuries. Conquerors still have the same motives and the same excuses. And their 'brave' legions behave in exactly the same way as they used to 3000 years ago.
